Having a diverse kid’s bookshelf is so important to me. What is a bookshelf that shows diversity and inclusion? It’s one that has a diverse group of characters. It’s one that talks about social issues like racism and acceptance. It teaches kids about love and inclusion. I want my young girls to read books that teach them these very important topics and normalize this idea that not every main character of the books they read will look like them and there is something really beautiful in that.
I compiled a list of some of my favorites children’s books that teach diversity and inclusion.
I hope that you will not only read these books with your children but let the lessons in these books spark meaningful and sometimes difficult conversations with them too.

Here is a video of my daughter reading “Say Something” by Peter Reynolds. This book really struck a chord for her and I hope it can for your children too.
