Boundless Life Review: Our Family’s Experience in Kotor, Montenegro

When we signed up for our very first Boundless Life cohort in Sintra, Portugal, we honestly thought it might be a “one-time” thing, an experiment to see if worldschooling could really work for our family. We’d spent years dreaming about a life centered around travel and learning, but also wondering if we were crazy for thinking we could actually pull it off with three kids. Worldschooling had always been our long-term vision, yet we were constantly bumping into the same challenges: curriculum planning, community, consistency, and the sheer logistics of keeping everyone learning, happy, and grounded while moving around the world.

Boundless entered our lives at the perfect moment. It offered structure without taking away our freedom. It gave our kids friends, routines, and belonging… things we could never fully provide on our own while jumping between countries. After Sintra, something in us softened. Maybe… this could be our life. Maybe we didn’t have to choose between stability and adventure.

But even then, we weren’t totally sure we’d sign up for a second cohort.

And then came Kotor.

We were part of the very first 3-month cohort, basically the pilot group, which meant no one really knew what to expect yet. And truthfully… neither did we. We knew next to nothing about Montenegro. We didn’t have a mental picture of the country beyond a few Google images of dramatic mountains and blue water. We hadn’t heard of Kotor before Boundless suggested it. This wasn’t a carefully-researched destination or a place we’d had on our bucket list. It was a complete leap.

And that’s exactly why this guide exists.

Our First Impressions of Kotor and What It Felt Like to Arrive as a Boundless Family

Even though this was our second Boundless Life cohort, arriving in Kotor felt like stepping into an entirely new chapter. We’d never been to Montenegro, didn’t know anyone who had lived there, and truly had no idea what to expect from daily life tucked between fjord-like mountains and the quiet water of the bay.

But from the moment we landed, it felt like Boundless had already laid out a soft runway for us.

A team member greeted us at the airport (a small detail that feels enormous when you’ve flown in with kids and luggage). And when we pulled up to our apartment, Marko, the General Manager and the heart of the Kotor community, was standing outside waiting for us. He gave us a full walkthrough, answered every question, and made sure we were fully settled before he left. The basket of local goodies on the table was the finishing touch that instantly made our new home feel warm and intentional.

Living in a Building With 7 Other Families Changed Everything

One of the most unexpected gifts of Kotor was that our Boundless home wasn’t just an apartment, it was a community.

Literally.

We lived in a building with seven other Boundless families, and that changed the entire experience. From day one, our girls were playing in the hallway with kids from across the hall. Doors were open, footsteps echoed between apartments, and there was this constant hum of life that made everything feel safe, connected, and almost village-like.

It meant:

• playdates happened naturally
• parents supported one another
• spontaneous dinners became a thing
• friendships deepened faster
• no one ever felt alone

It’s hard to put into words, but living in that building was one of the reasons Kotor became so special for us.

Community Happens Fast, Faster Than You Expect

The welcome ceremony in Kotor set the tone immediately. These aren’t surface-level introductions; Boundless creates a space where families actually see each other, and friendships begin on day one. By the end of the first week, it felt like we had known these families for much longer.

Our girls had best friends within 24 hours.
We had people to grab coffee with the next morning.
Everything unfolded easily, naturally, and almost magically.

It was one of the first times in our worldschooling journey that we felt held by community instead of trying to build it from scratch.

The School Felt Like an Extension of Real Life

Boundless Kotor’s education center is one of the most beautifully run programs we’ve experienced. Our kids weren’t just learning about marine life, they were exploring the bay, visiting marinas, meeting local experts, and creating projects tied to their SDG unit (Life Below Water).

Learning happened through doing.
Through exploring.
Through being immersed in Montenegro itself.

It was the kind of education we always hoped worldschooling could be, but rarely had the bandwidth to create on our own.

A Work–Life Rhythm That Actually Felt Sustainable

For us as parents, the coworking space being right next door to the school made a massive difference. We could walk the kids to class, get our work done, drop in for observations, and still be present in their daily life.

Kotor Itself Has a Way of Slowing You Down

It’s peaceful in a way you don’t expect.

Our kids grew so much here, emotionally, socially, and personally. And so did we.

What to Know Before You Go: Kotor, Montenegro

Flights & Getting There

• Flying directly from the U.S. to Montenegro can be tricky. Most likely, you’ll need to connect through a European hub like London, Frankfurt, or Dubrovnik (just across the border in Croatia).
• Tivat Airport is the closest to Kotor, but flights are limited. Dubrovnik is slightly farther, but often offers more options. Plan your connections carefully to avoid long layovers.
• The hack we found went like this: we really wanted to find a way to fly into Tivat if we could (where Boundless will pick you up) so we booked our big flight into London and was able to find a smaller flight into Tivat from there.

Visa & Entry Requirements

• U.S. citizens can enter Montenegro visa-free for up to 90 days.
• Always double-check if you are traveling with children, as some countries require proof of guardianship or consent forms.
• When you arrive in Kotor you will need to pay a tourist tax, you can pay at the tourist office in the city center or at the post office. You will need cash and need to do this within the first 48 hours of your arrival. The cost wasn’t much, I believe I paid around 90 euros for the whole family for 90 days.

Weather & What to Pack

• Kotor enjoys a Mediterranean climate: warm summers, mild winters, and occasional rain.
• Pack light layers for spring and fall, sturdy shoes for cobblestone streets and hikes, and swimsuits for bay adventures. I didn’t pack any hiking boots but I wish I would have because the hikes in Montenegro were absolutely incredible.
• Don’t forget rain jackets if visiting outside summer, and hats + sunscreen during peak sun months. It is very hot in the summer. We were there during fall and even then we had many beach days!

Local Transportation

• Kotor Old Town is compact and walkable. Most daily errands, cafes, and playgrounds are within strolling distance.
• For day trips, buses and taxis are available, but car rental is recommended for flexibility if you want to explore Montenegro more widely. Just note that we found taxis and car rentals to be more expensive here than other locations we’ve been to in Europe. We assumed this was because its a big tourist destination. Because of this we found we didn’t leave the city as much, especially during the week.
• Traffic can be really intense during high season so just keep that in mind if you are planning a day trip or weekend getaway.
• Parking in Old Town is limited, so plan ahead if you have a car.

Health & Safety

• Kotor is extremely safe, especially for families. Streets are quiet, traffic is moderate, and locals are friendly.
• Bring any prescription medications you need, as some pharmacies may have limited stock of foreign brands.
• One of the most important factors for us when picking a location is the safety as we really want our older kids to have the flexibility to walk places and Kotor went like the perfect spot for them to do that.

Practical Tips

• Cash is king in smaller towns, but credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and attractions.
• Internet is generally reliable in Boundless Life accommodations and co-working spaces.

Insider Advice

• The community structure at Boundless Life makes the transition seamless, but a little preparation helps. Have your kids ready to explore the outdoors, try new foods, and make friends quickly, they’ll have companions from day one!
• Be flexible with your expectations. Kotor is small and laid-back; life moves at a slower pace than big European cities, and that’s part of its charm.
• The locals can come off a bit cold at first (again another thing from the high tourism) but I found them to warm up quickly and many of them treating us as family by the end of the 3 months we were there.

Accommodations: Life in the Community Building

When we first arrived in Kotor, we weren’t sure what to expect from living in the multi-family community building above the school and co-working hub. As parents who value privacy, we worried it might feel crowded—but that worry quickly vanished. The apartments are thoughtfully designed, quiet, and modern, with new finishes and weekly cleanings that made settling in effortless.

What we didn’t expect was how the building would transform our experience. Stepping outside our door, we found our daughters instantly making friends with kids from other families just across the hall. Shared patios, playgrounds, and casual meeting spots became natural places to gather, creating a sense of community that felt immediate and effortless. Parents exchanged tips over coffee, children ran between apartments laughing, and the atmosphere was lively yet calm.

The location was perfect: above the school, just steps from the co-working hub, and close to Kotor’s Old Town. From our windows, we could see the mountains, the bay, and the bustle of families starting their day—reminders of the life we were building together. While other apartments are scattered throughout Kotor, all within walking distance of the school and hub, the community building gave us the rare combination of convenience, comfort, and connection. If we had to choose again, there would be no question: this is where we would live.

Other Accommodation Options Around Kotor

While the community building became our favorite, Boundless Life also offers other apartments throughout Kotor. These are all within a short walk of the school and co-working hub, and each has its own charm, from charming terraces overlooking the Old Town to quiet streets tucked away from the main thoroughfares. They’re a great choice for families who value a little more independence or want a slightly different neighborhood vibe—but for us, the convenience, views, and instant friendships of the community building made it the clear winner.

Location of Boundless in Kotor

Kotor’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is a dream for families, with its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and charming squares it really feel like something out of a fairy tale. Kids loved wandering through the hidden alleyways, spotting the friendly cats of Kotor, and imagining what life was like centuries ago. Unlike larger, busier European cities, Kotor’s Old Town is safe, walkable, and very easy to explore at a relaxed pace, which is perfect for families with young children. We felt very comfortable with our older children walking into the Old Town by themselves to grab some bread or a gelato in the afternoons.

Kotor is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking hiking trails in Europe, making it a paradise for families who love the outdoors. One of the must-do hikes is the trail up to the Castle of San Giovanni, a medieval fortress perched high above the city. While the full hike can be steep, there are shorter routes that make it accessible for families with younger kids. Once at the top, there’s some unforgettable panoramic views of the bay and the town below. Hiking became one of our favorite past times while in Kotor, especially on the weekends.

Day Trips from Kotor

One of the best things about staying in Kotor is its proximity to other must-visit destinations in Montenegro. Some perfect family-friendly day trips include:

• Perast: A charming village with a car-free waterfront, where kids can roam freely while parents relax at a seaside café. Restaurants there have some amazing seafood and plenty of gelato for the kids.
• Lovćen National Park: Home to stunning viewpoints, picnic spots, and the famous Njegoš Mausoleum, where families can climb to one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Balkans.
• Tivat and Porto Montenegro: A more modern contrast to Kotor’s history, this area has a stunning marina, lovely parks, and some very nice family-friendly restaurants.
• Kotor Cable Car: Just outside of Kotor and through the famous tunnel, there’s a new attraction where you can take a spectacular ride on a cable car up to the park. Spending time in Kotor, Montenegro with little ones is an incredible experience, but like any destination, it comes with its own set of challenges. When you’re considering to settle in for a few months, here’s a breakdown of what works really well for families with small kids and what might require a bit of extra planning.

There’s music playing at the entrance of the Boundless Education Center, the teachers greet us at the door for a warm welcome. It’s off to a space where the kids start reflection time and get ready for their project-based learning. Such a pleasant start to the day!

Mid-Morning: Work & Productivity for Parents

Parents set off to walk along the promenade and choose from several charming cafés along the waterfront, where remote work can feel more like a retreat. Parents settle in, answering emails, attending virtual meetings, or working on their current projects while enjoying views of the mountains and the peaceful rhythm of the town. Kids are deep into their next phase of learning.

Midday: Lunch & Family Time

By noon, parents are caught up on some work and looking for a quick walk through the Old Town to pick up some lunch and enjoy the sunshine. The kids are enjoying lunch at the Education Center, either a home cooked meal from a local partner or something from whipped up by the Boundless Chef.

Afternoon: Outdoor Adventures & Learning Beyond the Classroom

The afternoons go by quickly and soon it’s time to pickup the kids from the Education Center. As the kids get signed out, parents take them directly outside on the shared patio to start mingling together as families and make plans for the rest of the daylight hours.

Afternoons are when the magic of Kotor truly comes alive. Depending on the day, families might:

• Take a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, where kids hear fascinating legends of the island’s creation.
• Go for a scenic family hike up the Ladder of Kotor, spotting goats and taking in the breathtaking bay views.
• Visit the Maritime Museum, where children can learn about pirate history, naval adventures, and Kotor’s seafaring past.

✔️ Rain gear for fall and winter: December to March can be wet, so bring a solid rain jacket and waterproof shoes.

Kotor itself is extremely walkable, and most families don’t need a car for day-to-day life.
If you plan on exploring Montenegro, renting a car is a good idea. Just keep in mind:

• Montenegro has narrow, winding roads, driving here can be an adventure!
• The tunnel into and out of Kotor can take a while to get through during busy hours.
• Taxis are difficult to rely on and are often a bit costly for longer distances.
• Buses are affordable but not always frequent, so plan ahead.
