Layered doormats are all the rage this year! After looking at a few Halloween doormats I started to think “hey, I think I can make one of those”. That way I could use some of my favorite halloween puns to make the most festive front porch ever! Here is what I did to make my own DIY halloween doormat.

Create your own Halloween doormat

So first I had to pick up the supplies. I started with:

After I cut out the letters I placed them on my mat to plan out how I wanted it to look.

I used a black marker to make a dot in the corner so once I removed the stencils I would know where they should be placed again.

I used a foam paint brush to start to fill in the stencil letters one at a time. Then I used one hand to press firmly against the letter stencil and the other hand to paint. I used a dabbing motion against the doormat to get a light coat of paint on the mat.

I am going to be honest, I was really nervous during this part. When I was applying the paint I went kind of slow at first to make sure I didn’t mess.

What I learned: If I tried to put too much paint on the first coat I had problems with leaking on the sides of the stencil. I found it best to just create a light coat, kind of a template, that I could go back and fill in after.

After I completed the original coat of paint with the foam brush I used a smaller brush to finish up the details. I found the smaller brush took longer but gave much more coverage and made the lines sharper.

What I learned: I found the 2.5 inch letters I used were a bit too small. I felt like a little larger of a letter would have not only looked better but would be easier to fill in. I think the thicker letters do help as well with a lot less margin for error.

This DIY Halloween doormat took about 15 minutes to make. I am not the most crafty person and if I can do this you certainly can too!

What I learned: Give your mat extra time to dry. This type of mat has a wire time of material and the paint sits on top and can take a lot longer to dry than you think.
