The plus side of being at home is getting to work on projects that I have been procrastinating for a while. This week I tried my hand at a DIY laundry detergent.

I have always wanted to make my own laundry detergent. It doesn’t have all the perfumes and dyes and it saves a ton of money.
This recipe I use and it is so easy!

DIY Laundry Detergent

1. Grate one bar of Castile soap. I love this Kirk’s soap bar, we use it for so many things!
2. In a processor add the soap, 1/2 cup of borax, and 1 cup of washing soda (sodium carbonate) and blend until well mixed. It is not mandatory to use a processor. I just like to do so because it breaks down the castile soap even more which is so important for the high-efficiency washers. If you have a top loader you will be able to mix by hand.
3. I store my detergent in this airtight jar and use a half scoop (about 2 tablespoons) each use.

This recipe is great if you have a high-efficiency washer. It doesn’t create a ton of suds that works best for my front loader.

If you want to add an extra cleaning boost, add 1/3 cup of OxiClean.

You also have the option to mix the detergent with water before adding to ensure it has an even distribution.

Want to add a scent? Try adding some essential oils to the mix. I tend to add my oils to dryer balls so I opted for this unscented version.

I hope this recipe is helpful when making your own DIY laundry detergent. If this was helpful please share this post on social media!

Have you ever made it before? I would love to hear your experience in the comments below.
