Learning a second language at a young age has numerous benefits to any child. It greatly improves cognitive development and opens up a world of opportunities. So, what is the best age to learn a second language? Many studies show that the best time to teach your children a second language is before 8 years old. My 3 girls were exposed to foreign languages quite early, as we have family that speak both French and Portuguese. The chart below shows the ease of learning during those impressionable years.

One of the benefits of learning a foreign language at a young age is the noticeable improvement in cognitive development. Studies have shown that children who learn a second language have better memory, attention to detail and problem-solving skills. We have definitely seen the differences in our kids as a direct result of early second language learning!

Learning a second language at a young age can also have a positive impact on a child’s personal growth. Children who are exposed to different languages and cultures tend to have a greater appreciation for diversity. Our kids display this on every adventure that we experience in another country and show more interest in learning their native language. They also tend to be more confident and comfortable in new and unfamiliar situations, which can be a valuable skill in today’s ever-changing world.

language and culture

Because learning a new language requires our brains to think in different ways, it in turn strengthens our cognitive abilities. Children who learn a second language tend to perform much better academically in other subjects, such as math and science.

For all of these reasons, we partnered with our friends at The Cultured Kid as our language learning program.

They are currently running a 5 Day Speak in a Week Challenge that is a great way to introduce second language learning.

Here’s 5 Reasons to choose a Language Program:

Access to over 18 months of Language Lessons

There are so many wonderful resources to explore! The lessons are fun and the kids always have such a fun time.

Added time to Language Learning vs. Researching

If you’re anything like us, we’ve spent countless hours looking for videos and lessons online to supplement learning. The Culture Kid has saved us so much searching and gets us right in the thick of the learning!

Years worth of Curriculum

It’s so nice to have your year planned out and the resources already curated to make learning the priority.

Convenience of Learning at Home or Abroad

We’ve really enjoyed the ability to take the learning with us on our travels and never miss our routine.

Setting the Foundation

With the world changing so quickly, it’s imperative that our children learn a second language in order to set themselves up for their future. Giving them the opportunity to start early has far too many advantages to the foundation of their learning journey.
