Learning a second language at a young age has numerous benefits for young children. It greatly improves cognitive development and opens up a world of opportunities. So, what is the best age to learn a second language? Many studies show that the best time to teach your children a second language is before 8 years old. Learning a new language can become hard work as you get older, even older children and young adults find it more challenging than younger children. The learning rate is just different as you age and new information doesn’t sink in as easily for older learners. My 3 girls were exposed to foreign languages quite early, as we have family that speaks both French and Portuguese as their first language. The chart below shows the ease of learning during those impressionable years.

One of the benefits of learning an additional language at a young age is the noticeable improvement in the cognitive development of children’s brains. Studies have shown that bilingual children have cognitive benefits like better memory, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. We have definitely seen the differences in our kids as a direct result of early second language learning!
Learning a second language in their early years can also have a positive impact on a child’s personal growth and their natural ability to learn new skills. Children who are exposed to different languages and cultures at an early age tend to have a new perspective and a greater appreciation for diversity. Our kids display this on every adventure that we experience in a new country and show more interest in learning their native language. They also tend to be more confident, comfortable, and have more positive attitudes in new and unfamiliar situations, which can be a valuable skill in today’s ever-changing world.
Because learning a foreign language requires our brains to think in different ways, it in turn strengthens our cognitive abilities. Learning a new language causes a biological change in the neuroplasticity in the brain by creating new neural connections. Children who learn a second language tend to perform much better academically in other subjects, such as math and science.
For all of these reasons, we partnered with our friends at The Cultured Kid as our language learning program.
They are currently running a 5 Day Speak in a Week Challenge which is the best way to introduce second language learning.
