If you’re waiting with your packed bags, here are a few tips that’ll make your trip to Lisbon more beautiful and memorable:

Getting to Lisbon

Choosing the right time to travel is key to having a successful trip. Lisbon is a popular tourist destination, so it’s important to avoid peak travel times to avoid crowds and high prices. The best time to travel to Lisbon is from March to May or September to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and there are fewer tourists, which means shorter lines and less crowded attractions.

Flying to Lisbon with kids

Booking your flights in advance can save you a lot of money. Generally, flights to Lisbon from the USA are cheaper during the offseason. Booking your flights early can also give you a better chance of getting seats together, especially if you are traveling with young children.

One of the most important factors to consider when flying with kids is the airline. Look for airlines that offer kid-friendly services such as in-flight entertainment, special meals, and extra legroom. Some airlines like TAP Portugal, Delta, and United Airlines offer direct flights to Lisbon from major US cities such as New York, Boston, and Miami. TAP Portugal, in particular, offers a wide range of services for families traveling with kids, including free strollers, priority boarding, and a dedicated children’s menu.

Lisbon airport is a modern and well-organized facility that caters to the needs of families. The airport has a number of amenities and services that make traveling with kids easier, including baby changing facilities, family restrooms, and play areas.
For parents traveling with infants, there are baby care rooms available in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. These rooms are equipped with comfortable seating, changing tables, and private nursing areas, providing a peaceful and private environment for feeding and changing your little ones.

For families with older children, there are a number of play areas located throughout the airport. These areas are designed to keep kids entertained and active while they wait for their flight, with a variety of games, toys, and activities available.

Traveling by train in Portugal

We traveled to Lisbon from the south in the Algarve in Faro. While driving is an option, taking the train is a more convenient, affordable, and environmentally-friendly way to travel.

We started by checking the train schedules and prices on the website of Comboios de Portugal (CP), the national railway company. You can easily book your ticket online or at the train station. This really is the best option if you are exploring more than one city in Portugal.

If you are coming from the Algarve, like we did, it has two options: the regional train, which stops at every station, and the Alfa Pendular, a high-speed train that travels directly from the Algarve to Lisbon. The Alfa Pendular is faster but also more expensive.

The train journey from the Algarve to Lisbon takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the type of train you choose. The route is scenic, passing through charming towns, countryside, and coastal views.

Is Lisbon family friendly?

Lisbon is a city filled with family-friendly places. It offers a variety of activities and attractions that are suitable for families with kids of all ages, such as amusement parks, zoos, and aquariums. The city is also known for its beautiful parks and gardens, where families can relax and enjoy picnics or outdoor games.

Additionally, many restaurants in Lisbon offer child-friendly menus, and there are also several museums and exhibitions that are designed to be educational and interactive for kids. Overall, a trip to Lisbon is a great way to spend a family vacation, as it combines a rich cultural heritage with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and a good range of family-oriented activities.

What to pack for Lisbon, Portugal with Kids

Comfortable walking shoes

Lisbon is known for its cobblestone city streets, and many of the best things to do are within walking distance of each other. Especially with younger children in tow, it’s important to make sure everyone has comfortable shoes to prevent blisters and soreness.

Layered clothing for changing temperatures

It can be chilly in the mornings and evenings, but warms up during the day in the sun while you’re exploring. Be sure to pack light layers of clothing for everyone in the family. A light jacket that you can take off and that isn’t heavy to carry along or tie around the waist is a good option to stay comfortable all day.

Refillable water bottles and snacks

There is plenty of good food around Lisbon, but if you don’t want to have to stop and spend money on water, a refillable water bottle and light snacks are important. Especially with small children who get hungry often and need to stay hydrated, being prepared with water and snacks is key to a fun day. There aren’t many refill stations for water, and buying water bottles can really add up.

Something nice to wear for specials dinners

Lisbon is a foodie’s paradise, and there are so many great restaurants to try. Pack at least one great option for a dressier evening out, or more if you think you’ll want to explore all the fancy restaurants.

Where to Stay in Lisbon, Portugal with Kids

The Portuguese capital has some of the prettiest neighborhoods. The best way to pick a location is to decide what you want from your trip and choose the neighborhood accordingly.

Espaco Vitoria hosted by Arnaldo

This apartment in the heart of downtown Lisbon was perfect for us. It’s located on Pedestrian Street (Rua da Vitória) with access to the Baixa/Chiado metro. It’s totally renovated but maintains the original tiles which gives it that traditional Lisbon feel. This location was perfect for getting the kids out and right into the action going on around us.

This apartment is 3 bedrooms, one with a double bed with a private bathroom and closet, another with a double bed, and the third with 2 single beds. We loved the fully equipped kitchen and laundry area with a washer and dryer inside the apartment. These two features are great for families with young children! Also important, it has air conditioning in all rooms, but the windows fully opened to let in the fresh air and hear all the exciting activity of the City of Lisbon below. During downtime, our kids had so much fun people-watching from the apartment!

The only downside is that it would not be suitable for people with wheelchairs or mobility difficulties because it’s on the second floor with a total of 48 steps to access the apartment.
