I don’t know what it is, but having babies (3 in 3.5 years for me) has completely changed my hair, and not for the better. Postpartum hair can be such a challenge and its something I have struggled with for years. That was before I found a routine that worked for me and has seriously transformed my hair. Goodbye ugly postpartum hair.
First I want to start off with a before picture. So you can get an idea of how bad my hair really was. This is a picture of my hair after I let it air dry. It was in desperate need of some TLC and to be honest it didn’t look much better even after I blowdried it. I never left my hair uncurled because I felt like it looked so damaged. It was so bad. I can’t even believe I am showing you this. I am so embarrassed.
I obviously color my hair and it had taken its toll. I have dry and frizzy hair naturally so I had just accepted that I would never have that soft and shiny hair that other women have. This is the hair I was given and I would just have to live with it.
I was wrong.
After some trial and error and tons of research I finally found a new routine that worked for me and it has made the world of difference for my hair.
I think its pretty self-explanatory but having a great stylist is so important. Someone who knows your hair and knows whats best for you is a great place to start. Also keep in mind that we normally only see our stylist once every 6-8 weeks (and if you are a mom probably even less) so there is no way they can fix everything and maintain that for you. You have to take responsibility for your daily routine. That hard work is what will make the most difference. My stylist noticed a difference in my hair during the last few visits and this was because of the new practices I implemented. My stronger hair allowed me to go even lighter with my color which is something I always wanted but was always afraid of doing. If you are in the Tampa area I highly suggest my stylist Jamie at Headdress Salon. Scroll down to see how she transformed my color.
One of the first things I did was change my diet and water intake.
I am a firm believer that if its good on the inside it will show on the outside. It was important for me to increase my water intake as well as be more conscious about food choices.
I also started taking a supplement as well as mixing collagen peptides in my water. This is the one I take currently. Even if you aren’t struggling with postpartum hair problems I would suggest a great supplement, they can do wonders for your skin and nails as well.
I stopped leaving my hair tie in when I slept and changed my pillow case.
I was totally guilty of leaving my top knot in all day and all night and that destroyed my hair. Sometimes I tie my hair when I sleep but I make sure its loose and I use a scrunchie (hey scrunchies are back guys). I also changed to a silk pillowcase which allows your hair to slip right off and not create tangles and bed head. It helps maintain moisture for your hair and your skin too, so double win.
I let my hair air dry as much as possible.
This wasn’t too hard ( hashtag mom life) but the one thing I was guilty of was putting my hair in a bun when it was wet. I would shower and go, and that was damaging my postpartum hair. If you are doing that, stop now, your hair will thank you.
I really started to pay attention to my hair tools.
I started using a wet brush and just being gentler with my hair when brushing. Also, I invested in a good curling iron. This is the one I use. I thought for my hair to hold a curl I needed to have the heat turned up all the way but I was so wrong. When my hair is moisturized and healthy it holds a curl way better. Now I normally keep my heat on 200-300 instead of the 400 max.
I invested in the right products.
I have used everything under the sun. The top luxury lines, natural products, and even the drug store brands. Nothing ever worked. Until now! My hair is more bouncy and soft now than its ever been, even pre-baby.
I started using Monat about 3 months ago. Like with any new product I was a little skeptical. I kept seeing before and after pictures and I really didn’t think that the amazing results I was seeing could happen to me. My hair is really frizzy hair. My hair is colored. It is also so dry. After talking to my friend Liz and hearing about her results I decided to give it a try. I started with the Renew Shampoo and the Deep Smoothing conditioner.
I am going to be completely honest with you, I noticed a difference after one wash. Yes, this is not a scam or sales pitch this is the truth, ONE WASH! I wasn’t even done washing the conditioner out of my hair and my hair felt different. Fluke right? Ya I still wasn’t 100% convinced. I continued to use the products ( I wash my hair 3 times a week) and after two weeks I was hooked! I was seriously addcited to how hydrated and soft my hair felt and I basically knew I found the products that could finally help me.
Once I was basically hooked on the shampoo and conditioner I knew my next investment was the oil. Notice the word “investment”. Yes, these products aren’t what I would call cheap. They are definitely on the pricer side for hair products but they are worth the investment in my book. I was desperate for anything to help me not look like a giant frizz ball all the time and I really feel like Monat saved me.
So when my oil came in I was so excited to try it. My friend Liz told to me to really saturate my hair with the oil, normally its a few pumps from the bottle. For me, on the very first time, I used TEN PUMPS. That should give you an idea of how much my hair was crying out for hydration. Again after I washed out that first oil treatment I was shocked. I thought it couldn’t get any better after the shampoo and conditioner but it was. Ten times better!
I am a full-blown lover of all things Monat and use their styling products and dry shampoo. I just keep seeing my hair transform and I am still in shock that I have the hair that I always wished I could have. It keeps getting better, the more I use these products the more I see my hair change.
One thing I totally wasn’t expecting was to see was new hair growth. This wasn’t the hair growth that comes after postpartum hair loss, this was “my baby is two years old hair growth”. The natural ingredients in Monat (yes its natural too) stimulates the hair follicle. hair that was normally dormant started to grown again. So that postpartum hair that was looking thin is now growing back into the thick pre-baby hair I miss so much. Yes I might be dealing with annoying flyaways for the time being but its so worth it to have my hair back!
