Families typically join in 1–3 month “cohorts” in destinations like Portugal, Spain, Greece, Bali, and beyond, where kids attend a local learning program and parents plug into a remote-work-friendly lifestyle.
So… what is worldschooling?
Worldschooling is an alternative education approach where kids learn through travel, cultural immersion, and real-world experiences instead of (or alongside) traditional school. Think history lessons at ancient ruins, science through nature, and global awareness through everyday life abroad.

The Easy, Comfortable, First-Timer Favorite.
Overall vibe: Relaxed, sunny, extremely livable.
If this is your first time doing long-term travel with kids, this Boundless Life location feels safe in the best way.
Why Families Love It
- Extremely walkable
- Strong food scene (so much variety)
- Everything you need is accessible
- Easy day trips (Ronda, Marbella, Gibraltar)
- Weather is reliably good
- 10/10 ease factor
It checks boxes. It feels stable. Life runs smoothly.
For families nervous about uprooting their lives, this is often the soft landing.
The Tradeoffs
- It doesn’t have the dramatic “wow” factor of other locations
- It can feel comfortable in a way that’s less transformative
- You might not feel as far outside your comfort zone
Best for:
Families who want sunshine, simplicity, and low friction. Maybe not best if you are looking for this transformative travel experience since a lot of what makes this location great is its similarity to life in North America. I am not saying you aren’t getting any Spanish culture in Estepona, I just find that maybe it’s the least cultural expansive of the Boundless locations. We really did love this location and for seasons when we want more simplicity, ease, and routine (which is a necessity as a full time travel family) this location is perfect for us. We actually plan to spend an extended amount of time here soon, doing multiple cohorts back to back, for this specific reason.

Kotor, Montenegro
The Scenic, Tight-Knit Community Experience.
Overall vibe: Jaw-droppingly beautiful, intimate, slightly rugged.
Kotor has the most stunning landscape of the group. The Bay. The mountains. The Old Town. It’s hard to compete with that daily backdrop of this Boundless Life location.
Why Families Love It
- Outdoor adventure everywhere
- Hikes + water + old town magic
- A true cohort community feeling
- Slower pace
- Unique, less “mainstream Europe” feel
This is the only location where we really felt that deep, built-in community bonding. It felt like summer camp for families.
The Tradeoffs
- Food variety isn’t as strong
- Sourcing specific items can be harder
- Transportation can be expensive or traffic-heavy
- It can feel small after a few months
Best for:
This is a great location for families who value connection, scenery, and outdoor living over convenience. If you are looking for that transformative experience, this location will give it in the best kind of way. Even though Kotor has all of the conveniences you will need for daily life it does stretch you a bit more than other locations. As more experienced travelers we loved this and valued the uniqueness this location provides. If you want something a bit different than your every day life and to experience a different culture and way of living, this location really does that well. The culture rich old town and beauty of the bay are something special. I usually suggest Kotor to families who have traveled quite a bit and are looking for a new experience and location that many people haven’t visited yet. When you add in the large community building and the bonds you make here versus other locations, our experience in Kotor is high up on our list.

Sintra, Portugal
The Magical, Historic, Lisbon-Access Hybrid.
Overall vibe: Fairytale meets practical.
Sintra is visually unreal. Castles. Forests. History layered on history.
Why Families Love It
- Multiple castles within walking distance
- Easy train access to Lisbon
- Access to incredible Portuguese cuisine
- Coastal access nearby
- Public transportation works well
You get charm and city access. That’s a rare combo.
The Tradeoffs
- Heavy tourism
- Crowds in peak season
- Off-season closures
- Damp microclimate (mold can be a real issue)
We personally had to tweak some living situations at this Boundless Life location because of moisture. They were totally manageable, but worth knowing. Sintra also can be pretty steep at times so keep that in mind if you have a young one that needs a stroller. I always suggest that families bring a baby carrier as well.
Best for:
Families who want European magic but still need proximity to a major city. This location gives the true European feel with walkable streets, cafes on sidewalks and historic castles in your backyard. This location is great for families starting their Boundless Life journey because it does check a lot of boxes. It has the ease of everyday life that Spain can offer but a bit more cultural richness. The struggle comes with the influx of tourists during the popular months. Cost of living is great and we found grocery shopping to be some of the least expensive of any of the locations we had lived in. One of our favorite things about the cohort was the access to Lisbon. We hopped on the train to visit multiple times a week. We were also really surprised by the coastline and how much time we would spend at the beach.
This was our first cohort and the one that got us hooked into boundless. I really believe that the first cohort will always be special in that way.

Tuscany, Italy

The Local, Livable, Under-the-Radar Italy
Overall vibe: Authentic Italian town life with easy access to the icons.
More local. More everyday Italy. And for a lot of families, that’s exactly the appeal.
We haven’t been to this cohort yet but it is in the works ;)
From friends who’ve done Tuscany, here’s the consistent feedback:
Why Families Love It
- Just 40 minutes from Florence
- Excellent train access to explore all of Italy on weekends
- Not a tourist-saturated city
- Flat and very walkable
- Lots of parks
- Produce markets in the town squares
- Strong local Italian vibe
- Incredible food and wine culture
- Parks with cafés create natural social hubs
There’s something beautiful about living somewhere that feels… normal. Kids playing in the piazza. Elderly locals chatting on benches. Fresh produce stacked under striped tents.
If you’re into wine, food, and traditional European rhythms, this location really shines.
And the train access makes it a fantastic launchpad for weekend travel.
The Tradeoffs
- Weather can be less predictable than southern Spain
- Not close to the water
- Parking can be frustrating
- Food variety is limited, amazing Italian food, but by month three some families crave diversity
- The town can feel repetitive by the third month, which makes weekend travel appealing
- Smaller expat community compared to other locations
- Some families felt the education center wasn’t their favorite
- Surprisingly, not as much green play space around the education center as expected
- Because of the constant weekend travel, community doesn’t feel as connected.
For some families, that feels peaceful and immersive.
For others, especially if you thrive on constant novelty, it can feel slow by the end.
Best for:
Families who want authentic Italian living, easy train travel, strong food culture, and a non-touristy European base. This location seems great for families with younger kids as well. Since some of the boundless locations do have quite a bit of elevation this location might help with families who really want a stroller (but be warned about strollers and cobblestones, make sure you have a rugged model).
La Barra, Uruguay
The Underrated, Soul-Filling Surprise
Overall vibe: Coastal, low-key, deeply connective.
La Barra surprised a lot of us. It doesn’t have castles. It doesn’t have dramatic European architecture.
But it has something else. Please don’t compare this location to its European counterparts, because you will be disappointed. La Barra isn’t trying to compete with the European charm of the other locations, it has its own hip surf town vibe culture and you need to go into this location appreciating it for all that it DOES BRING instead of why it doesn’t look like the other locations.
Why Families Love It
- Safe, quiet beach town energy
- Kids roam freely, beach play, skateparks, etc.
- Slower rhythm of life, calm, intentional community
- Incredible meat, fresh produce, simple whole food
- Strong cohort bonding (especially because you’re a bit “off the map”)
Plus the access to travel the rest of the continent from this Boundless Life location! It is filled with warmth and adventure!
The Tradeoffs
- You will need a car
- Less variety in restaurants in off season
- It can feel remote
- Winters are colder and windier than expected
- Shopping for specific brands or specialty items can be limited
- High Season can be very expensive
This location is walkable but not in the historic square type of sense. There is a rich laid back culture with smoothie bowl shops, surfers walking past, and friendly locals sipping Mate.
You have a lot of accessibility but it might be a bit more expensive and in off season a car might be a necessity.
Best for:
Families who want depth over distraction and are okay trading convenience for connection. If you love the beach, the countryside, great food, and want to the opportunity to see South America, this location is for you!

Kamakura, Japan
The Culturally Immersive Reset
Overall vibe: Safe, structured, fascinating.
Japan is unlike any other campus experience.
It feels incredibly safe. Clean. Organized. Intentional.
And culturally… it stretches you.
Why Families Love It
- Kids gain independence quickly (public transport is incredible)
- Deep cultural immersion
- Beautiful balance of mountains + sea
- Proximity to Tokyo for big city days
- Food quality is next level
There is something grounding about Japan. The systems work. The streets are quiet. The culture values respect and order.
The Tradeoffs
- Smaller living spaces
- Language barrier
- It’s less of an “expat bubble” and more of a true immersion
- Some families feel culturally stretched in a good but tiring way
This location asks you to adapt, but in return, it gives your kids an extraordinary global perspective.
Best for:
Families who want true cultural growth and don’t mind adjusting their expectations. Our family is in Kamakura at the moment and we love this location so much (it will actually be our first location we repeat) but there is so much to say about this location that I just can’t fit in one paragraph. Bali, Indonesia

Overall vibe: Tropical, entrepreneurial, high-energy expat hub.
Bali is completely different from the European cohorts. We’ve spent quite a bit of time in Bali, just not in cohort. Here is what we’ve heard from our close friends who have.
The Upsides
- Warm year-round
- Very affordable lifestyle
- Huge digital nomad scene
- Wellness culture everywhere
- Amazing villas
The Challenges
- Traffic can be intense
- Infrastructure can feel chaotic
- Humidity is real
- Very different cultural adjustment compared to Europe
- The full time community means that there isn’t a closeness in the cohort like other locations.
Families who love Bali tend to be adventurous and flexible.
Best for:
Entrepreneurial families who thrive in high-energy, tropical environments.
Syros, Greece
The Balanced, Authentic Greek Island Experience
Overall vibe: Classic Greek island charm.
Syros is different from the postcard version of Greece people imagine.
It’s not Mykonos-party energy, it’s Santorini-tour-bus chaos, it’s real Greece.
Neoclassical architecture, seaside living, strong local culture, and a slower island rhythm, but with more infrastructure than most Greek islands.
Why Families Love It
- Beautiful harbor + swimming spots
- Walkable main town (Ermoupoli)
- Strong sense of Greek culture without extreme overtourism
- Manageable size, not overwhelming
- Safe, relaxed island energy
- Cohort bonding tends to be strong because island life naturally brings people together
It has that “we live on a Mediterranean island” feeling without feeling cut off from the world.
The Tradeoffs
- Island logistics (ferries, limited flights)
- Fewer big grocery stores or specialty items
- Lots of stairs to the Education Center. Can be tiring for little legs
- Off-season can feel very quiet
- Restaurant variety is solid but not massive
Island life is magical, but it’s slower. Things move at Greek pace. Which is beautiful… if you’re okay with adjusting your expectations.
Best for:
Families who want Mediterranean charm, authentic culture, and a balanced mix of walkability + island adventure.
